- Chill Your Glass: Place your highball glass in the freezer for 15 to 30 minutes before mixing. A frosted glass keeps the cocktail cold longer and preserves the effervescent bubbles.
- Fill with Ice: Fill the chilled highball glass to the absolute brim with large, solid ice cubes. Using plenty of ice ensures the drink stays chilled without watering down quickly.
- Measure and Pour the Spirit: Using your jigger, measure exactly 2 ounces of chilled unflavored vodka and pour it directly over the ice.
- Add the Carbonated Mixer: Tilt the glass slightly and slowly pour in 4 ounces of chilled ginger ale. Pouring along the side of the glass prevents excessive foaming and maintains carbonation.
- Stir Gently: Insert a long bar spoon to the bottom of the glass and give it a single, gentle pull upward. Do not over-stir or shake, as this will destroy the crisp bite and fizz.
- Garnish and Serve: Squeeze the fresh lime wedge directly over the top to release the sweet citrus edge, drop the spent wedge onto the ice as a garnish, and serve immediately.
Notes
The 1:2 Ratio Rule: For the best flavor balance, always stick to 1 part spirit to 2 parts carbonated mixer. If you prefer a lighter, lower-alcohol drink, you can adjust the ratio to 1:2.5 by adding an extra half-ounce of soda.
Lower Calorie Option: You can easily swap regular soda for a zero-sugar or diet alternative. This reduces the total drink calories to roughly 130 kcal (the exact caloric value of the alcohol itself).
Safety Warning: Never use a cocktail shaker for this recipe. Shaking carbonated beverages builds up pressure that will pop the shaker tin open and create a mess while destroying the bubbles.
Flavor Variations: Slide a thin slice of fresh peeled ginger root down the inside wall of the glass before adding ice to intensify the spicy aroma without altering the liquid ratio.
