Equipment Needed

  • Small saucepan
  • Strainer
  • Mugs
  • Mortar and pestle (optional)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)
  • 2 black tea bags or 2 teaspoons loose black tea
  • 2-3 green cardamom pods, lightly crushed
  • 1/2 inch fresh ginger, grated or thinly sliced
  • 2-3 teaspoons sugar, or to taste

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, combine water, crushed cardamom pods, and grated ginger. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat.
  2. Reduce heat and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes to allow the spices to infuse into the water.
  3. Add the black tea bags or loose tea leaves to the simmering water. Continue to simmer for 1-2 minutes.
  4. Pour in the milk and add sugar to your desired sweetness. Stir well.
  5. Increase the heat slightly and bring the tea to a gentle boil. Watch carefully to prevent it from overflowing. Let it boil for 1-2 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it reaches a rich color and aroma.
  6. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Place a strainer over your mugs and pour the pulhia tea through it to remove the spices and tea leaves.
  7. Serve your warm and comforting pulhia tea immediately.

Notes & Tips

  • For a stronger ginger flavor, you can add more ginger.
  • Adjust sugar to your preference. You can also use honey or other sweeteners.
  • For a creamier tea, use full-fat milk.
  • Do not over-boil the milk once added, as it can change the texture and taste.
